Many who know Shyam Kumar Parashar recognize his ability to express his wisdom in his writing and quotations. One of his favorite mantras is that, “memories are far more meaningful than materials.” With this in mind, here is your chance to share a thought or memory as a meaningful way of saying, “Happy Birthday.”
Whether a simple wish from a colleague, a funny or emotional story from a friend, a milestone celebration remembrance, or a reflection on an inspiring encounter from a student – any of all of the above are welcome. If you have a picture you would like to share, please also attach it to your post. Lastly, please know that you have the option of making your contribution, “private,” or, “public,” meaning it will be viewable to only Dr. Parashar or all visitors to this website, respectively.

You are inspiration
The highlight of my day is to read your thoughts and explanations on Dr. Panda’s daily quotes. It is a privilege!
Respected Sir: you have been a great teacher and an inspiration to anyone who wanted to learn surgery. Your teaching and surgical skills were such that tissue plains and fascia appeared from a magical level that almost got created under your knife. It’s a proud moment for us to call ourselves your students. We wish you a 100 years of health, wealth and prosperity.
Happy Birthday
Happy 80th Birthday,Dada.Join the club of 80.
Happy birthday Dr. Parashar! My time in India celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary is one of my favorite memories. It was inspiring to see the strength of your family and I often think about those values when it comes to my own family. I wish you the best for many years to come.
Happy Birthday, Dr. Parashar! Some of my favorite memories with your grandson, Nikhil, were all thanks to your generosity in hosting us in Goa and inviting us into your home. It was a great privilege to meet you. It is no wonder Nikhil is so proud to have you as a grandfather. Best, Patrick
Dr. Parashar, When we arrived on your doorstep as Nikhil’s friends, you welcomed us as family and invited us into the celebration of your 50th wedding anniversary. I remain astonished to this day by your kindness, generosity, and wisdom. You set an example which we would all do well to live by, and I wish you the best in celebrating this birthday with your family and loved ones.
A toast to a wonderful down to earth personality Dr. Parashar. I have had the privilege of knowing you from my childhood days when we were neighbours at Panjim and Mukta’s schoolmate. On behalf of the entire Nogar family, I wish you a very Happy Birthday and many many more years filled with good health and lots of happiness…

Happy Birthday, Dr. Parasharji. May God bless you with a 100 years of health, wealth and prosperity.
Dear Uncle Parashar
I have known you all my life and it has been my good fortune to have had you be part of it. I am fortunate to call Manish and Manu my close friends, but have had a close relationship with your entire family.
As I think about your life journey I am reminded of the words of Albert Einstein who said “Try not to become a person of success, but rather try to become a person of value”. The messages written to you here certainly testify to this fact.
I remember you as someone who was always kind, laughed a lot, smiled always, took the high road, and always looked at the positive side of every circumstance. You did not change who you were, irrespective of your life situation. You did not change one bit after you left GMC. I have some great memories of you – staff/students cricket matches at GMC, birthday parties and boxing matches (well, that was more Manish’s idea) at your home, graduations, weddings, and just hanging out in Syracuse, Ithaca and NJ.
Being an accomplished physician and surgeon, you have always been humble, respectful, and warm. Your children have taken after you, each in their own way accomplished, humble, respectful and warm. This is your legacy!
Thank you for the kindness and love you and Aunty have extended to me and my family. Thank you for the many years of friendship our families have enjoyed. Thank you for showing us, by your example, how to enjoy life to its fullest.
Happy 80th Birthday! May God bless you, always. With much love, Jason and the Abraham family.
On this special day, we want to tell you that we feel honored and fortunate to have met you in person. Your thoughts and elucidation of Dr. Panda daily quotes is very influential and something that we truly treasure. Wishing you many many happy returns of the day! Namaskhar!!
Happy Birthday, Dr. Parashar! I’ll never forget celebrating your 50th wedding anniversary with Nikhil and company. Your generosity and kindness defined that priceless experience, and I feel privileged to have met you and your beautiful family. Best wishes and happy celebrating.
It’s my pleasure to be a part of the 80th birthday of Dr. Parashar, a truly inspirational person. It always inspired me listening to your life philosophies. May it be talking about “om” or any life experiences, I always enjoyed moments with you.
Have a wonderful birthday. I wish your every day to be filled with lots of love, laughter, happiness and the warmth of sunshine.
We have known Dr. Parashar uncle since 1983. He has always been a dear friend, advisor and father figure to us . A few stories we always fondly remember about uncle: we remember when we had a party at home with lots of guests, and a debate about medical issues started. While all the non-doctors were discussing the latest cures, uncle and aunty were quietly sitting and smiling. I still remember their expressions and even though they were the most knowledgeable people in the party, they humbly sat back and enjoyed watching the debate. Uncle has always been very down to earth, respected and always there for us when we needed him. Whenever uncle came over, we had set menu of kadhi and karelas. Even today when I cook kadhi I always miss having them over. We are glad to have them in our lives.
Most importantly, Happy Birthday Uncle! May you have many more!
Best wishes on your 80th. birthday to my elder brother ,guide ,mentor and an example setter in true sense.
Happy birthday and may God Bless you. You have a way of spreading happiness with your smile.
Dear Uncle , We all are truly blessed to have known you and aunty. We sincerely appreciate the warmth and love you have always given us. Our best wishes to a man with a “HEART OF GOLD”.
My family and I have beautiful memories of the time spent with Dr Shyam and Shashi Parashar.
For me personally he is a dear brother. Many years back they came to Vasco station to receive a guest. The train was late and they came to visit us at our place. It was early morning when the door bell rang. I opened the door and was both surprised and happy to see them because it was Rakhi day. Since that day I always remember him on this auspicious day and pray for his good health and happiness.
You are an incredible man with a remarkable family. Sharing front porch time on Mt. Willcrest is a pleasure and a privilege. Happy Birthday!
Dear Shyam
It gives me a great pleasure to wish a close friend of mine a very happy 80th birthday. He is like my brother and part of the family for over 70 years. We have been together from grade 3 in school. His accomplishments in surgery and teaching have been remarkable.
Shashi Bhabhi has been a strong force behind the scene. We wish him all the best on this happy occasion .Binnu and Saroj
Uncle ji.
After a long hiatus – nearly 30 odd years – we met again, in 2006. It was lovely meeting you – no longer a gawkish teen but rather a woman in her 40s now. What a reunion indeed! And since then I have had the pleasure of your company and Aunty’s on several occasions – my life has been so enriched by these meetings. And I am truly blessed. Now you approach your octogénaire years, I am reminded of a Roman poet, Ausonius (310-395 BC) who said: Let us know the happiness time brings, not count the years. And 25th Sept will be another day but it will be a special day as it’s all about the delightful memories it will bring. So Happy Birthday dear Uncle – I say it with a few photographs… Love and affection, Indrani

A calm, gentle and smiling face, which makes worries seem like something found on Mars, is the picture which flashes in our minds when we think of Phoophaji. Through this stance on life, he inspires positivity in all lives that he touches. We are confident that his calm demeanour has cured patients even before he has used his skill with the scalpel. Phoophaji, may you continue to shower your love and blessings on all of us for many, many more years to come. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!

Dear Dr Parashar,
I am very fortunate to know you. You are an inspirational figure to me and those who know you. I wish you a very happy birthday.
Happy Birthday Phoophaji !!! Welcome to the Octogenarian decade 🙂 Phoophaji, it has been such a great blessing to know you not just as a relative but as a family, friend and most importantly the wonderful person. Over the years you have not just inspired me to dream big but have showcased through personal example the work one needs to put in to make big dreams come true. A true inspiration.
There are so many stories over the years that I can recall whether it was learning about the subtle American and British English pronunciation differences in Bandra, to picking me up at the Greyhound Station in Chattanooga, to the awesome packing skills at display so that I can get tons of ghar kar khaana when heading back from Chattanooga. It has just been amazing. The latest trip was the most special one since Ayan got to meet you. There are lot of things I have learned from you over the years. But a few of the key things I am always inspired from you are importance of education, always lending a helping hand and now as a parent – how to raise/mould the next generation. I hope to instill these same value and learning in Ayan. Phoophaji I wish you the very best of health and I look forward to hear many more stories and continue to be inspired.
Happy Birthday Tauji! Amanda, Aarav, and I hope you have an amazing 80th birthday! We are so lucky to have you in our lives. You are an inspiration and role model for us all. (PS Aarav looks at pictures of you and says, “Other Nana!”
Wishing you a joyous 80th birthday, Dr. Parashar!!! It has truly been a pleasure and honor to get to know you and Dr. Shashi. You all exemplify all that is best in humanity, and I am very grateful our paths crossed. We send you our best birthday wishes and look forward to seeing you all upon your return.
Love and hugs,
Lee

My fond memories are of a kind ,well informed professor who made our surgery classes very interesting and exciting .I always looked forward to them.
I don’t need to look far with regard to his surgical skills as my mum who is now 93yrs old, was his patient when he operated upon her parotid tumour fortunately a benign one ,when I was in my third MBBS , leaving no scar and an absolutely normal postoperative result.
That was his surgical prowess.
Thank you Sir ,we can never ever forget you.GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Warm Regards, Alethea Barbosa

Bhyia, it has been a true joy being your friend these past 63 years. I want you to know I truly value your love, care and your inspiration. You bring happiness to everyone around you and we love you very much. It has been a true privilege to grow together with you and Shashi Ji. I still remember clearly being driven to the hospital by you in England when I was giving birth to my daughter Seema, you kept me calm and took such good care of me as a doctor, as a friend and as a brother.

Dr. Parashar,
Thank you for your generous hospitality and sharing your home in celebration of Natasha’s wedding to Raj. Based on the many devoted messages gathered here, it is clear that the compassion and kindness I have come to know from your grandchildren is no coincidence. Wishing you a happy 80th birthday and many more joyous years to come!
Dear Dr and Mrs Parashar,
10 yrs ago , it was love and gratitude that made me take that ‘pilgrimage ‘ through Tenneesee – from Memphis to Chattanooga to pay my respects to 3 ICONS that influenced me – Elvis -you and Madame Parashar.
At GMC you and Dr Abhraham had that unique gift of an orator which you used so well to command the attention of the class. What you both and Madam taught in class and clinics has been indelible and invaluable for the rest of my career.
You have been blessed with another 10 yrs and I hope you both will enjoy many more decades of the rich full life that you have lived so far.
With fond love to you Mrs Parashar and Mukta

Dear Sir Parshar,
I feel truly honored and blessed to be able to wish you a very happy birthday!
Sir, you belong to a rare breed of extraordinary humans who have the natural ability to inspire others by your humility , compassion , wisdom , calmness and composure .
I clearly remember the times when I met you in CCU when Aunty wasn’t doing well. I saw a deeply caring husband , a rock solid father and an accomplished physician all in one being handling the situation with remarkable poise , grace and rock solid courage. You may not even know but there were lessons to be learnt for people like me on how to deal with tough situations and life events with serene calmness !
Blessed are the people like me who have known you in their lifetimes and have been able to enrich their minds and souls by the light of your character , truth of your beliefs and value of your experiences.
In my religious and cultural mythology you are a Sufi and Wali of our modern times!
Respect and Aadab!

Happy bday nanaji. From two bandar
In our deepest crises (and believe me, there were many) our parents would invariably say, ‘Let us put faith in the counsel of Dr. Parashars’. We invariably did that. The counsel was always forthcoming and unfailing. Our debt of gratitude, too great to be redeemed, remains and will ever remain. Today, as Dr. Parashar steps into the eighties, we realize the kind of unsolicited burden of responsibilities, we literally thrust upon Dr. Parashars and how gracefully, lovingly and conscientiously they have borne it for all these years. To make decisions, even for oneself, is no easy task. But to make far reaching decisions for people who look up to you, when engulfed in despair, is virtually a divine function, which Dr. Parashars have always divinely discharged. Like us, we are sure there have been several others who have been touched and inspired by them. Dr. Parashars are truly great and as Winston Churchill says, the price of such greatness is responsibility.
Sangeeta and I have been blessed with Dr. Parashars’ unfailing counsel, kindness and encouragement. Very often, we underestimate the healing power of a touch, a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a smallest act of caring when nothing seems to be going right. We underestimate the power of a smile, a kind word, an honest compliment, a sense of direction, which has the potential of turning our lives. Dr. Parashars, you have been to us, all this and much more than we can express. Yet, like true leaders, Dr. Parashars never overpowered or dominated others’ lives. Their mission is to see betterment in others, to help others realize their potential, to share others joys. This, Dr. Parashars achieve in such a masterful fashion that the blessed might say ‘we did it ourselves’. But deep down, when there is time and occasion to think and to reflect, the vastness of goodness which Dr. Parashars represent, dawns and it is only sentiments of very deep gratitude and spirituality that dominate the thinking process. ‘Thank you’ is perhaps the only sensible expression that says it all. Thank you Dr. Parashars!
When i joined as student in GMC,First three personalities i saw (still i cherish) were Dr.Parashar and Dr NGK Sharma and Dr.Mrs Jacob. Prof Parashar influenced me very much because of his walking style and talking style. His walking was very fast and talking was also fast and full of movements of lips during talk. His eyes were very sharp and used to move like monitoring camera today. These things made me to remember him till today.During my student days his all these features and characteristics mesmerized me.During my final MBBS he took lecture for our batch.I still remember well.It was morning first lecture in lecture room next to boys common room in RMO hostel building at Panaji.Topic was on Hemorrhoids. In first introduction he mentioned us patient with haemorroids will never keep his bottom at one place. He will always try to move his bullock on and off on chair. and we all laughed so loudly and he also joined with us.Isaw his working in OT also but that time i did not know that i will become anesthetist otherwise lot of things i would have picked from him had i got chance to give anesthesia to sir’s cases.Any how i met Dr Mukta, she happen to send me mail so i could write few lines on sir.Sir you are Genius.I wish you very long life healthy and Painfree life.Happy 80th Birthday.
Dear Sir, we still remember n cherish the wonderful memories of our long association right from our days in GMC to our blossoming friendship in Saudi Arabia. On your 80th birthday , we would like to wish you a hail n hearty life ahead and may you forever spread happiness with your infectious smile . Love from Prakash & Shashi Prabhudesai

Happy Birthday Nana.
Our paths crossed only a few years ago, but our time spent together has felt like decades to me. You instantly welcomed me into your family. I am grateful for the conversations and discussions we’ve had. Your warm stories fill the cold chill of any night, and light up everyone around you. Your life’s work goes beyond your professional accomplishments. The family you have raised and nurtured are in my opinion the greatest accomplishments. Your children and grand children are rippled reflections of you. Look closely at each and we see a piece of you. Thank you for your guidance, love, and most importantly friendship. Lots of love, good wishes for the many more years we get to share with you.
Wishing you a very happy birthday sir. We thank you for your wonderful contribution as a teacher, and a surgeon par excellence. May you never grow old

Sir, the first time that you taught us, was about communication to build doctor patient relationship before proceeding to medical history and examination. I still vividh remember your telling us about bed si manners and to observe other Doctors about the same. Thank you sir, for passing to us such precious knowledge ,the basis of a fulfilling medical profession. Wish you a ” Happy Birthday ” and Namaskar to yourself and Madam Parashar. Regards to Mukta, with whom I played Badminton at GMC.
Wishing you many many happy returns on your birthday.
You are an inspiration to me the same way you have been to thousands of students in the past.
Namaskar Sir, You have been my teacher so also Mrs. Parashar. I also worked with you anaesthetising your Surgical patients in Goa Medical between 1977 TO 1981 By 1980 , I think you went on a job offer to Saudi Arabia. We met again in Alkhobar, when I was working at Almana Hospital between 1995 to 2003. We ( Mayura, Yatin, Vandan and myself ) fondly remember the good old days of spending the evenings at your residence in Saudi on the day of Diwali / Yearly Pooja and the variety of dishes we enjoyed year after year from Mrs. Parashar. We thank you and Mrs. Parashar for the guidance and advice we sought on various occassions . It was such a pleasure meeting you and Mrs Parashar again there in Saudi and we continued our close relationship with our both families. I read the books you authered and posted to us in Canada and it reminded me, the days of my senior Residency in Anaesthesia at Goa Medical, working with you, and seeing some of those patients and their pictures was hillarious. May God give you both good health , Long life , peace and happiness always. Vandana sent you Birthday wishes earlier today. I was in the Hospital and on call so these delayed special 80th Birthday wishes come to you from the heart. With Warm Regards to all of you including Niladri and Mukta.

Dear Dada, Wish you a very happy 80th birthday! You have always been a father figure to me. You are an inspiration to me and the world!
As a surgeon, , I for one, will never forget what pus is ! As a junior resident in Sugery, in 1980, I was draining an abscess. Peeped in from behind my guide for MS,Dr. S. K. Parashar, and I was tense. What are you doing ? A very simple question from him, wow, I was relieved. … I & D of an abscess Sir, I said feeling relieved. He continued to watch me, and asked me, Jog, what is that yellow material that is flowing out ? Wow again, pus, I said with great confidence. … and came the next, what is pus ? Clean bowled, as I did not know the answer. He just defined it to me. ” Pus is nothing but dead and degenarating WBCs, with or without tissue debris, with or without bacteria.”. He walked away happy to have taught his student. As he would always say, “Give me a monkey, I will teach how to operate. and added, when not to operate, is a bigger surgical decision, which probably a monkey wont understand.
